mROS levels affect stem cell function and fate. The level of mROS is closely related to the fate and function of stem cells. Stem cells maintain basic ROS levels to balance self-renewal and differentiation. When mROS levels are below the baseline, stem cell function is impaired and metabolic capacity is reduced. When mROS accumulate to an intermediate level, loss of immobility and the induction of senescence occur. Further accumulation of mROS to a high level leads to cell death. mROS, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species.
