Table 1.

Eight Major Central Chemoreceptor Sites in the Brain Stema

1. Retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN)
2. Rostral medullary raphe (MR) (raphe magnus)
3. Caudal MR (raphe obscurus) indirectly through the RTN
4. Caudal nucleus tractus solitarious
5. The region just dorsal to the caudal ventral medullary surface
6. Pre-Bötzinger region
7. Fastigial nucleus of the cerebellum
8. Orexin neuron containing regions of the hypothalamus

Responses to stimulation across the different central chemoreceptor sites can be synergistic.11
