(A) Classification of cell culture systems by their capacity for environmental control/and or monitoring, and estimates of the required financial investments. Estimates for the required financial investment include the full costs associated with the required set-ups, including the key infrastructure required (see Supplementary Table S2 for prices of exemplary commercial systems) (B) Venn diagram summarizing the benefits and disadvantages of monitoring, controlling, and/or reporting cell culture environments in experiments. E.g., acquirement of a bioreactor is high in cost, but often only setpoints are reported without actually measuring environmental conditions in the medium (mean ± SE) leading to unknown physiological relevance and low reproducibility.
