In a normal fed state, the circulating ketone body concentration is approximately 50 μM, and it can increase to 1–8 mM in neonates, during fasting, after prolonged exercise, and on a ketogenic diet. In pathological conditions like diabetic ketoacidosis, ketone body concentration can accumulate up to 20 mM.
