Metabolic pathway and chemical structure of plant phenolics. Monophenols such as benzoic acid, cinnamic acid and their derivatives are biosynthesized via the shikimate pathway. These phenolics remain in free form or accumulated as ester bound and glycoside bound performing various physiological roles.
