Free energy surface for the potential in Fig. 1(b) at different pulling forces. Pulling in the x direction lowers the system’s energy proportional to its x location. This causes the upper state, which is farthest to the right, to become the dominant state at higher forces and also causes the lower-left state to become unstable and vanish.
