a The metal-binding members of the ArsR-SmtB class act as repressors of the target gene in the apo-state. In contrast, when bound to a metal ion, a conformational change ensues, and transcription of the target gene is initiated23,24. b RexT is a non-canonical member of the ArsR-SmtB family of transcriptional regulators. Rather than binding metal ions, RexT is proposed to respond to H2O2 stress through formation of a disulfide bond that initiates transcription of the thioredoxin-encoding gene trxA217.
