Differences in the distances between synaptic proteins allow synapse-specific regulation of the release probability at cerebellar synapses. Munc13-1 was located approximately 50 nanometers from P/Q-type VGCCs in granule cell boutons. In contrast, Munc13-1 was tightly coupled to a cluster of P/Q-type VGCCs in stellate cell boutons (approximately 10 nanometers). The distance between Munc13-1 and P/Q-type VGCCs at these synapses results in a lower probability of synaptic vesicle release at granule cell synapses and a higher release probability at stellate cell synapses.
