In this example, grid points (solid black discs) map to each other inverse consistently. The forward map (a) is inverted by the backward map (b). However, folding of the space occurs as the middle two points swap positions. Off-grid points map under linear interpolation according to (c/d). We see that the interpolated displacements for the small solid red disc (Inline graphic) do not result in an invertible map. Hence, this mismatch would be penalized by the inverse consistency loss, but only when evaluated off-grid.
