TMAO pathway. Dietary precursors, like carnitine, choline and phosphatidylcholine are metabolized by gut microbiota into trimethylamine (TMA), which will interact with flavin monooxygenases (FMOs) in the liver, producing trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), an important factor in the pathogenesis of CVD.
