Histopathological analysis of virus-infected mice. Two-week-old AG129 mice (n = 3) were infected intraperitoneally with WT or VP2 I149K mutant. Uninfected control mice were administered with PBS instead (naïve). Mice were euthanized upon observation of two-limb paralysis, or at the indicated time-points, and organs were harvested and processed for H&E staining. Black arrows indicate neuropil vacuolation and neuronal degeneration in the anterior horn region of the spinal cord. All observations were made at 20× magnification. The scale bar denotes 100 μm.
