Representative examples of possible search strategies. Search strategies used by mice to locate the hidden platform can be divided into hippocampus-dependent and not hippocampus-dependent strategies. Pathfinder categorizes each trial according to 1 of 8 possible strategies. Spatial strategies include ‘direct path’, ‘directed search’, ‘focal search’ and ‘indirect search’. ‘Chaining’, ‘scanning’, ‘random search’ and ‘thigmotaxis’ are considered as non-spatial strategies.
