Causes of lighter and/or shorter menstrual bleeding

  • Disorders of hypothalamic- pituitary axis;

  • Ovarian insufficiency

  • Psychogenic factors: stress due to exams, or excessive excitement about an upcoming events may cause shorter and/or lighter bleeding;

  • Eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia) or Chronic diseases (celiac disease, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis);

  • Excessive exercise and crash dieting;

  • Intrauterine adhesions (Asherman’s syndrome) and endometrial tuberculosis (mainly in adults);

  • Use of oral contraceptives may result in decreased menstrual flow;

  • Hyperthyroidism may be the cause of light flow;

  • Hyperprolactinemia

  • Hyperandrogenism (PCOs)
