TABLE 1.

Strategies for Surgeon Scientist Faculty to Engage Undergraduate and Medical Students Into the Surgeon Scientist Pipeline

Undergraduates
  • Engage in institutional research-intense educational and scholarships programs (Undergraduate Research Office scholarships, Biomedical Science majors, Honors Biology programs, Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) programs, undergraduate diversity programs)

  • Engage in teaching for undergraduate majors that focus on Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, premedical course work or teaching for nonscience majors that include health related didactics

  • Participate in research career fair days

  • Lead or participate in underrepresented in medicine educational programs

  • Mentor undergraduate students to pursue longitudinal research projects

  • Pair undergraduate students with near-peer vertical surgeon scientist trainee mentors for research projects (medical students, residents)

  • Lead or participate as mentors in NIH T34 undergraduate institutional training grants

Medical Students
  • Lead or participate in teaching medical school core curriculum

  • Participate in medical student specialty interest groups

  • Lead or participate as mentors for medical student summer research scholarship programs

  • Facilitate medical student application to subspecialty organizations that offer medical student research awards

  • Lead or participate as medical student research mentors for NIH T35 short-term institutional research training grants

  • Mentor medical students for longitudinal research projects during medical school

  • Participate as faculty mentors for research electives

  • Lead or participate in advanced competencies in medical school that expose medical students to surgeon scientist careers

  • Pair medical students with near-peer vertical mentors for research projects (residents, fellows)

  • Participate in graduate school education

  • Lead or participate as mentors for dual degree MD, PhD and medical scientist training programs (MSTPs)

NIH indicates National Institutes of Health.
