Adrenal glucocorticoids secreted from the zona fasciculata of the adrenal cortex induce lipolysis resulting in elevated fatty acids in the bloodstream. These fatty acids cause downstream inhibition of insulin receptor substrates 1 and 2 (IRS 1 and 2). This inhibition is critical in the development of insulin resistance.
