The effect of 2DG on the balance between glycolytic and mitochondrial energy production contrasts with that of SARS-CoV2. The proteomic signature found in this study suggests that the principle effect of 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) in the heart is to shift the equilibrium from glycolytic to mitochondrial (OXPHOS/OP) ATP production, as occurs in cultured cells. These effects are opposite to those of SARS-CoV2 infection in cells (illustrated to the right), and so support the idea that 2-deoxyglucose could have anti-viral properties in vivo as well as in cultured cells3.
