Electrogenicity of chlorhexidine/H⁺ antiport. Proton movement across PA2880 proteoliposomes was monitored by pyranine fluorescence. Proteoliposomes were prepared with equal internal and external pHs and chlorhexidine concentrations. Membrane potentials (approximately +36 mV, 0 mV, and −100 mV from top to bottom) were imposed by the addition of valinomycin to liposomes reconstituted with asymmetrical K⁺ concentrations, indicated by the liposome cartoon immediately to the right of each trace. The detailed buffer conditions are listed in Table S4. Every experiment was repeated 3 times, and the results of one representative experiment are shown here.
