Effects of individual BMPs on osteoclasts. BMPs can influence osteoclasts either directly, stimulating their differentiation (BMP2, -5, -6, -7) and resorptive activity (BMP4, -7), or indirectly, through stimulation of osteoblasts (BMP2, -4, -7) which then increase expression of RANKL and stimulate osteoclast maturation.
