The endolysosomal system. Illustration showing entry pathways into cells and compartments mentioned throughout this review that constitute the endolysosomal system. These vesicles traffic throughout the cell and exchange their contents through ‘’kiss-and-run” or “full-fusion” events. Particles from the extracellular milieu can access cells by caveolae-mediated endocytosis, clathrin-mediated endocytosis, macropinocytosis, and phagocytosis. Particles entering through endocytosis and micropinocytosis are delivered to early endosomes. Vesicles generated during autophagy are depicted on the left side of the figure.
