Samples were incubated in PSW for 36 h at 37°C before the numbers of pixels covered in images of the surfaces were determined (37°C). The surfaces were each washed with 60 ml of ASW at 4°C, and the pixels were counted again. The data are averages of the data for 10 fields of view. Each data point represents seven repetitions of the experiment.
