(a) EUB probe for virtually all bacteria; (b) DSV probe for the sulfate-reducing Desulfovibrio species; (c) AW probe for the acetogens E. limosum and Acetobacterium. Cells hybridizing with the AW probe were found in dense clusters (arrow) on the outer root surface.
