Study design. The index event was diagnosis of transfusion‐dependent β‐thalassaemia (TDT). For the purposes of this study, TDT (or TDT recurrence post‐allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation) was defined as β‐thalassaemia treated with a minimum of eight transfusion episodes during the first year of chronic transfusion therapy or a history of at least 100 mL/kg/year of red blood cells. The study observation period for eligible patients with TDT diagnosed ≥ 5 years prior to data collection was the 5‐year period prior to data collection or death (A). For eligible patients with TDT diagnosed 2–5 years prior to data collection, it was the period from TDT diagnosis to data collection or death (B).
