Comparison of meta-analyses of randomized trials (25,26) and the Danish Osteoporosis Study (DOPS) (22) with observational studies (18,19) show that when hormone replacement therapy is initiated in women <60 years (y) and/or <10 years-since-menopause there is a consistent reduction of cardiovascular disease across randomized trials and observational studies in similar populations of women. DOPS included the closest cohort to the population of women in observational studies with an average age of 50 years and time-since-menopause of 7 months and average body mass index of 25.2 kg/m2.
