Schematic depicting (ab) microbead fabrication and (cd) formation of capsules or microstrands. Microbeads are fabricated (a) using LDW to deposit alginate into (b) a calcium-chloride/gelatin layer, and (c) subsequent polyelectrolyte complex formation coats the alginate microbeads with PLL or chitosan. (d) The alginate is then solubilized leaving a shelled structure with an aqueous core in a precise spatial location and geometry.
