Kaplan–Meier survival curves of 111 very old patients receiving prolonged mechanical ventilation base on gender. Comparisons by gender of 111 very old patients receiving prolonged mechanical ventilation (P = 0.038: Log rank test). Cox proportional hazards regression analysis of the 111 very old prolonged mechanical ventilation patients showed that the risk of death was 34% lower of those very old female patients than those very old male patients (P = 0.045; HR = 0.66; 95% CI 0.442–0.991).
