Normal nephron development is governed by a delicate balance between nephron progenitor self-renewal and differentiation (left panel). Disruption of mitochondrial complex III in SIX2 progenitor cells is associated with amino acid (aa) depletion, reduced nucleotide synthesis, and inhibition of cap mesenchyme progenitor proliferation and differentiation, whereas disruption of mitochondrial complex III in HOXB7 ureteric progenitors does not block the development of the kidney’s collecting system.
