Table II.

Diagnostic criteria for periprosthetic joint infection and aseptic loosening (according to 2013 Infectious Disease Society of America). 21

Periprosthetic joint infection (≥ 1 positive criteria) Aseptic loosening
1. Sinus tract that communicates with the prosthesis or the presence of purulence without another known aetiology surrounding the prosthesis. Three positive criteria were all negative, and surgery confirmed the loosening of at least one prosthetic part.
2. Acute inflammation as seen on histopathologic examination of periprosthetic tissue.
3. At least two cultures that yield the same organism. The growth of a virulent microorganism (e.g. Staphylococcus aureus) in a single specimen is also considered as indicative of a periprosthetic joint infection.
