Generalized schematic drawing of the surface evolution process observed in situ and reported in the current contribution. An Fe(110) single-crystal surface exposed to CO hydrogenation conditions sequentially undergoes the process of oxide reduction, two-step carburization, and the formation of long-chain hydrocarbon molecules, graphite, and coke.
