Connection preferences are divided into three functional categories: Association (A), Sensorimotor (B), and Subcortical (C). retRSC neurons strongly innervate all association cortices, but only the visual and auditory cortex (sensorimotor) and hippocampal formation (subcortical). retM1 neurons strongly innervate only the lateral association (association), somatosensory, motor, gustatory and visceral cortices (sensorimotor). retBLA neurons strongly innervate only the frontal and lateral association (association), olfactory, gustatory and visceral cortices (sensorimotor), and all subcortical targets (subcortical).
