Hexadecane was used as the hydrocarbon phase, while bacteria were suspended in 10 mM potassium phosphate, pH 5.0. Note that for S. salivarius HB, the optical density is reduced essentially to zero but that for S. oralis J22, a sizeable optical density remains, also after prolonged vortexing.
