Schematic illustration of the proposed molecular mechanisms by which apigenin protects the hepatocytes from the excess fatty acid-induced lipid accumulation.

As shown, treatment with apigenin ameliorates OA-induced deregulation of lipid metabolism by activating the autophagy flux and rescuing mitochondrial dysfunction, leading to an increase in β-oxidation of fatty acids and ultimately decreasing the lipid accumulation in hepatocytes.
