Areas prioritized when adding 19.5% of the boreal caribou distribution to the protected areas network rarely aligned for the six conservation objectives, i.e. to maximize (a) boreal caribou habitat, (b) representation of other (i.e. non-boreal-caribou) species at risk, (c) taxonomic representation of other species at risk, (d) representation of unique species at risk, (e) climate refugia potential, and (f) mass of soil carbon. Maps depict the distribution of conservation value across the boreal caribou distribution for each conservation objective and priority areas identified when prioritizing to maximize representation of each individual objective. Inset figures show the distributions of conservation values across the 665 planning units.
