Time line of an emotion recognition trial. Participants saw video clips (8 s) of 12 different young female models expressing fear, anger, contempt or sadness. For each participant the lower part of the face of half of the models was covered with a digitally added surgical face mask (left). After each video a response screen appeared, asking participants to select the emotion they thought the person in the video had experienced (middle) by button press. After they had entered their response, participants were asked to rate how sure they were that their judgement was correct (right). In the figure, original German terms and texts are translated to English. Note that the black bar covering the model’s eye region was not shown in the video
