My first job offer in astronomy. For this research assistantship during the 1956 – 57 academic year, I worked for Bill Liller, measuring the relative intensities of emission lines of gaseous nebulae, recorded on chart-paper rolls. I used a mechanical device called a planimeter, which measured the area enclosed as I followed the charted signal with a stylus. Of course, it was just a routine task, but obviously everybody starts out simply and works their way up.
