The famous footprints on the 40-m Dunn Solar Telescope at Sacramento Peak Observatory. Summer students provided assistance with both research and pranks. The footprints were simply manila paper cutouts, spray painted black, taped to the outside of the tower. They were installed by summer student Rodney Schultz, an expert rock climber from CU. Logistics, art work, and support were provided by Rodney’s wife Bev, fellow summer student Spiro Antiochos (then at Stanford), my wife Karen, and me. For decades, the perpetrators were not known. DST designer Dick Dunn was not amused. The only clue was the faintly visible outlines left over from spray painting the offending footprints on the floor of the garage attached to a house at the top of Hound Dog Hill.
