Diagram of a single-vault SIRDO showing the forming pile, which is pulled down after 3 months to produce the composting pile. The composting pile is located in a secondary processing area where composting continues without the addition of new waste. The solar collector is positioned directly over the composting pile and helps maintain elevated temperatures required for biodegradation or desiccation. Urine is contained in the secondary processing area and is not allowed to contaminate the environment.
