Presence of HSV-1 and β-amyloid in the midbrain of C57BL/6 mice at 8 days post infection (unpublished data from authors). C57BL6 mice were infected intranasally with McKrae strain of HSV-1, then followed until the peak of brain infection at day 8. Next, brains were subjected to cryopreservation, sectioning and immunofluorescent staining for neurons using anti-NeuN antibody (red), anti- HSV-1 antigens (green) and anti-1-42 β-amyloid antibody (turquoise).
