Figure 5. Vaccination and Changes in Age-Standardized Death Rates in Combinations of Metro-Nonmetro Categories and Census Divisions by Race/Ethnicity, March 2020-February 2021 to March 2021-February 2022.

Figure 5.

NH = Non-Hispanic

Notes: Death rates were age-standardized using 3 age groups (0-54, 55-74 and 75+) using the overall U.S. 2020 population as the standard population. The unit in this analysis is combinations of metro-nonmetro categories and Census divisions (i.e. large metro Middle Atlantic). Data was imputed for one or more age categories for Hispanic residents in year 1 and year 2 in nonmetro areas in New England, Hispanic residents in year 1 in nonmetro areas in the Middle Atlantic division, NH Black residents in year 1 in nonmetro areas in the Middle Atlantic division, and NH Black residents in year 1 and year 2 in nonmetro areas in the Mountain division, New England, and the Pacific division because death counts were between 1 and 9 for one or more age categories and were thus suppressed by CDC WONDER. The linear regression lines were weighted using the 2020 population for Hispanic, non-Hispanic Black, and non-Hispanic white residents respectively in each geographic unit.
