Micromagnetic simulation results showing the domain structures for flakes of different thickness at remanence. While the very thin layer is characterized by long-wavelength modulations, the thick layer shows stripe domains. In-between, at intermediate thicknesses, magnetic bubble domains emerge. Their occurrence is the result of the thickness-dependent dominance of the exchange energy over dipole–dipole coupling.
