For each sorted cell population, we defined a set of stage-specific genes and compared their expression in whole testes of sterile and fertile hybrids. Mitotic and MeioticBefore X-Inact. cells are present at lower abundances in sterile hybrids while MeioticAfter X-Inact. and Postmeiotic cells are present at higher abundances (Schwahn et al. 2018). FPKM is normalized so that the sum of squares equals 1 using the R package vegan (Oksanen et al. 2007). Differences in expression were calculated with Wilcoxon signed-rank tests where *** indicates p < 0.001 and * indicates p < 0.05 after FDR correction (Benjamini and Hochberg 1995).
