Fig. 1 — The production, migration and distribution of M/NPs in the environment. Plastics are released to the environment during manufacture, use and disposal. The environmental plastics can be gradually broken down into M/NPs. M/NPs can easily diffuse elsewhere through water and/or air circulation. M/NPs have been found to be widespread in air, lakes, rivers, oceans and soil, where they can be taken up by various organisms.
