The first six to eight years after the publication of the seminal work of Degenkolb et al.54 resulted in about one manuscript per year on this topic, but after 2010, the trend has increased. While there are still relatively few papers on this topic to date, we believe this will expand greatly in the ensuing years, especially as varied rationales for pairing competitive co-cultures evolve, and as techniques for scaling the production of molecules of interest become more refined.
