Enhancement of type 1 collagen (COL1) expression in the myocardium of T. cruzi-infected mice. (A) Distribution of COL1 (red) in the cardiac tissue of uninfected mice. A gradual increase in COL1 deposition was noticed in the myocardium at later acute (60 dpi; B) and early chronic infection (90 dpi; C). Dense COL1 fibrils were clearly seen at 120 (D), 150 (E), 180 (F) and 210 dpi (G). The increase in COL1 expression was confirmed by measuring the COL1 fluorescence signal with Knime workflow (H). DAPI (blue) stained nucleus. Bar = 10 μm. Student’s t-test: **p ≤ 0.01; ***p ≤ 0.001; ****p ≤ 0.0001.
