Mouse studies based on single-cell transcriptome analysis suggest that hyperoxia or hypoxia can modulate the local immune microenvironment of the lung. These findings suggest a dynamic interplay between microbiota and host immunity and give us reason to hypothesize that perturbations in local lung oxygen concentration originating from invasive MV may alter the diversity of the pulmonary microbiota by affecting the local immune microenvironment.
