Effect of an hrcA mutation on the transcription of different heat shock genes in B. japonicum. Total RNA was isolated from wild-type (WT) B. japonicum and 5549 (hrcA mutant) cells harvested before (0) and 30 min after a heat shock from 30 to 43°C (30) and analyzed by primer extension experiments. The extension reactions were performed with the primers ES5UP2 (groESL₅) (3), 702 (groESL₄ and groESL₁) (3), HrcA11 (hrcA), and Sig107 (hspA) (29). The mode of regulation of each gene or operon is indicated.
