The [URE3] and [PSI+] prions follow all three criteria (Wickner 1994) because their phenotype is often due to the deficiency of the normal protein form, but [PIN+] and [Het-s] do not (Coustou et al. 1997; Derkatch et al. 2001) because their phenotypes are due to novel effects of the amyloid form.
