Ethanol induction of ς^B in wild-type B. subtilis. BSA46 (ctc::lacZ) was grown in Luria broth (LB) (16) at 37°C. At an optical density at 540 nm (OD₅₄₀) of 0.15, ethanol (4% vol/vol) was added to half of the culture (0 time). Samples were taken at 15-min intervals and were analyzed for β-galactosidase (13). The data is given in Miller units (15).
