Targeting CD47 immune checkpoint for cancer immunotherapy.Cancer cells rely on the expression of “don’t eat me” signals such as CD47 to inhibit their phagocytotic clearance by macrophages, while blocking CD47 reduces tumor growth by enabling macrophages to phagocytose the cancer cells [reviewed in refs (22)].
