The impact of hypoxia/ischemia on the processing of amyloid precursor protein. During normoxia, the alfa-secretase is more active than the beta- and gamma-secretases resulting in very little production of β-amyloid. During hypoxia, the beta- and gamma-secretases are stimulated causing an excess production of β-amyloid leading to the formation of amyloid plaques—a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.
