L-NAC reverses the adverse effects of fentanyl infusion on EEP, but not EIP. Actual values of end inspiratory pause (Panel A) and end expiratory pause (Panel B) before (Pre), and during continuous intravenous infusion of fentanyl (1 μg/kg/min) and following two bolus intravenous injections of vehicle (VEH) or N-acetyl-L-cysteine (L-NAC, 500 μmol/kg) given at 60 and 90 min after start of fentanyl infusion in two groups of unanesthetized rats. There were 6 rats in the VEH group and 6 rats in the L-NAC group. The data are presented as mean ± SEM.
